Phytomedicine Educational garden

More than 1.000 cultivated plants are grown worldwide. It is hardly possible to cultivate our crops without any plant protection measures. In the Phytomedicine Aducational garden, we only carry out plant protection measures to a very limited extent, which gives visitors the opportunity to observe the development of weeds, damage caused by animal pests and diseases over the course of the growing season and to observe the effects on the crop. The Phytomedicine Teaching Garden is divided into three parts: Arable Crops, Permanent Crops and Weed Crops.

Arable crops with and without crop protection

In the case of field crops, we focus on the most common crops in Baden-Württemberg. In the Phytomedicine Aducational garden we avoid the use of pesticides as far as possible. Fungicides and insecticides are only used in cases of very heavy infestation. With herbicides we follow a different strategy: half of a crop is treated as under production conditions, the other half of the crop remains completely untreated. By comparing the halves of the plots with and without plant protection, visitors can get an impression of the specific effects of pests and the importance of plant protection for modern agriculture.
