Arable crops with and without plant protection

Plant protection includes measures designed to protect crops from diseases, pests and weeds.
These measures can be carried out mechanically or chemically.
Alternatively, beneficial organisms, microorganisms and attractants can be used as biological and biotechnical methods.
Integrated pest management focusses on preventative measures to protect the environment and health.

Plant protection in the Educational Garden Phytomedicine

In terms of field crops, we concentrate on the crops most commonly grown in Baden-Württemberg. In the phytomedicine training garden, we largely avoid the use of pesticides.
Fungicides and insecticides are only used in cases of very high infestation pressure.
We pursue a different strategy with herbicides: one half of the crop is treated as it would be under production conditions, while the other half remains completely untreated.
Visitors can thus gain an impression of the specific harmful effects and the importance of plant protection for modern agriculture by comparing the halves of the plot with and without plant protection.
